The story of artificial intelligence

It started with a question so audacious it was almost absurd: can a machine think? In the summer of 1956, a group of mathematicians and engineers gathered in a wood-panelled seminar room at Dartmouth College and dared to find out. They called the field Artificial Intelligence — and with that name came a promise that has shaped every decade since.

For the next forty years the field swung between euphoric summers and harsh winters. Early programs could solve algebra problems and play chess, but real-world language and vision remained stubbornly out of reach. The bottleneck was always the same: data was scarce, computers were slow, and the algorithms were educated guesses.

Everything changed quietly in the early 2000s when the internet began producing data at a scale no library could match — billions of text documents, images, and interactions. Researchers discovered that if you layered enough simple mathematical operations on top of each other — each layer learning to notice slightly more abstract patterns than the last — you could teach a computer to recognise a face, translate a sentence, or predict the next word in a paragraph. These stacked layers became known as neural networks, inspired loosely by the way biological neurons fire in chains across the human brain.

Training a neural network means showing it millions of examples and adjusting billions of tiny numerical weights using an algorithm called backpropagation— essentially a systematic way of saying “you were wrong, here is how wrong, now correct yourself.” Do that enough times on enough examples and a pattern emerges: the network stops memorising and starts generalising. It begins to understand in a narrow but genuinely useful sense of the word.

The modern era began in earnest in 2017 when Google researchers published a paper titled Attention Is All You Need, introducing the Transformer architecture. Instead of reading text word by word, Transformers weigh every word against every other word simultaneously — capturing context across an entire document in a single pass. That insight unlocked models of unprecedented scale. GPT, Claude, Gemini, LLaMA: every major large language model today is a Transformer at its core.
